It's Impossible Astronaut Day!

Today is Impossible Astronaut Day!

It is a day for Whovians to be geeky and have fun, drawing tally marks on themselves and friends to mark the anniversary of the airing of the Doctor Who episode 'The Impossible Astronaut'. 

For my fellow Whovian food geeks, it's a perfect excuse for a Doctor Who blog hop!

A mysterious phrase, oft repeated in the sixth season. "Silence will fall." Later we find out more, but we're still waiting for that question to be asked, the question that must never be answered...

Doctor who?

For lunch, the Dude has leftover Italian sausage with a side salad. Cucumber stars and provolone cheese letters decorate the top. On the side he has strawberries and blackberries, a few pieces of coffee-chocolate, and a few veggie crisps.

For Bean I also packed leftover Italian sausage with a small salad on the side. She has provolone cheese stars, cucumber slices, strawberries and blackberries. She also has a wedge of cheese spread with some multigrain gluten-free crackers, and a little bit of vanilla bean yogurt with Enjoy Life double chocolate granola and strawberry stars.

Is that a TARDIS baran I see?! Why yes. Yes, it is. 

I used an Exacto knife, blue silicone baking mat, and this fantastic guide from Oh!Bento UK to make reusable TARDIS baran! They're a little wonky (and the plaque looks like a third window) but I love them to bits and pieces. The silicone is a bit fiddly to cut, especially the corners and small bits, but they were pretty easy to make. I'm still trying to perfect the shape.

For Brick, a small salad with turkey-cheese and ham-cheese rolls on the side. He also has strawberries and blackberries with a few bits of coffee-chocolate, and a small side of potato chips.

"I wear a stetson now. Stetsons are cool." HA! I love River Song's reaction to the stetson...

Fish Fingers and Custard Day

April 3 is the anniversary of the airing of the Doctor Who episode 'The Eleventh Hour', which introduced Matt Smith as the new Doctor. As such it is now the official Fish Fingers and Custard Day! I've done a few (or more than a few..!) Doctor Who lunches here, so it only makes sense that we would celebrate.

The Impossible Astronaut

One week until new episodes of Doctor Who air! 

My Whovians are counting down the minutes.

My biggest kid's 8th grade class took a tour of the high school Friday. Great way for entering freshman to get a feel for the layout of the school, the class structure, the clubs and sports offered. He needed a lunch and requested... what else? Doctor Who, of course. G-man and Bean had just watched the episode The Impossible Astronaut earlier in the week, so it was on my mind.

Hard boiled duck egg with cheddar rockets, apple chunks, and fake Jammie Dodgers.

Flirty pasta salad.

Egg wears a stetson now. Stetsons are cool.

Good-bye Ten, Hello Eleven

The girls just finished up the fourth season of Doctor Who and started the fifth. They said farewell to their favorite Doctor in The End of Time and hello to the newest Doctor in The Eleventh Hour. I had minor dental surgery this week and was a bit off my game, so a mid-week mini Doctor Who marathon was a nice way for all of us to get a little down time.

Bean snuggled up to me before bed and asked if we could do Doctor Who lunches for school to kick off the weekend. Um, YES!

*sniff, bawl, sob* So sad to see Ten go! David Tennant is adorable, and made such a fun, bouncy Doctor. Except when he was sad, or angry. But even then he was still adorable.

To say good-bye, we put in a few of our favorite Ten moments.

A peppered turkey sandwich with cheese letters and fruit leather numbers. A banana - "Always take a banana to a party..." (from The Girl in the Fireplace), the fantastic black framed hipster glasses, and a little gummi Rose.

A satsuma (from The Christmas Invasion) is tucked under a sweet marshmallow baby Adipose, the cutest alien 'monster' EVER. 

The girls have only seen the first episode with Eleven so far, but to welcome in the new guy I put together a few of my favorite moments with the lanky. quirky Matt Smith.

Fish fingers and custard, of course! Cheese letters and fruit leather numbers, and a bow tie pick - "Bow ties are cool." Also, a cowboy hat cheese sandwich (from The Impossible Astronaut).

Goldfish ("Sorry. Checking all the water in this area. There's an escaped fish." - from The Beast Below) and grapes hold killer mutated Snowmen, with a smiling apple tucked in tight (the Eleventh Hour).

To keep the custard contained, I tucked the silicone cup - TARDIS blue, of course - into a disposable Solo cup with a lid. This kept the custard from bouncing around and spilling all over the rest of the lunch.

And to drink, I packed a small bottle of tea for each of them - "A super heated infusion of free radicals and tannin." (The Christmas Invasion). Well, theirs was iced rather than heated, but perfect either way.

Now how to prepare them for how dark the series turns in the next few seasons...
